Some baby and children’s mattresses use materials such as vinyl/PVC and polyurethane foam, but the No-Compromise™ Organic Baby Crib Mattress is free of harmful chemicals and tested for chemical emissions and certified by GREENGUARD® to meet their strict standards for children. With a dust mite barrier, it’s also hypoallergenic and further meets federal and state flammability requirements without the use of chemical flame retardants, but the waterproof, 2-stage dual firmness surfaces — made of easy-to-clean 100% Polyethylene with organic cotton fill — are what ultimately drew us to this mattress.
The 2-stage dual firmness feature offers dense support on each side of the mattress to foster a safe sleeping environment for both infants and toddlers. First, start on the infant side — manufactured to provide the extra-firm, flat surface recommended for babies; later, flip the mattress over to expose the side designed with less surface tension for the comfort and support of growing toddlers.
Measuring 27 3/4″ W x 52″ L x 6″ D, this mattress fits standard cribs and toddler beds, including crib-to-toddler-bed transitional pieces, like the Marlow Convertible Crib we purchased from Pottery Barn.
New Parent Tip: Unless you purchased a crib mattress that is not waterproof, a crib mattress protector is generally not a necessity (see: Our Thoughts); however, because we found the firmness (essential for an infant-safe sleep environment) to be a little too firm, we supplemented the mattress with a TL Care® Waterproof Crib Fitted Mattress Cover Made with Organic Cotton in Natural. While Sydney was largely unable to verbally corroborate our intentions, we believed the quilted organic cotton surface safely softened the sleep surface a bit.
